Hurricane Coaches

CoachAmythest  Head Coach Amethyst Tymoch

is a familiar face at Health Unlimited, having taught swim lessons, youth and adult stroke clinics, swim team and masters swimming activities during her time here. Coach Amethyst has turned a fledgling swim team into to a successful and popular program that burst onto the competitive scene with an impressive 2006-2007 season. Prior to coming to Health Unlimited, Amethyst was a youth swim league coach at the Cincinnati Sports Club for four years while also teaching swim clinics and a masters program.

“Coach A.” is currently one of Health Unlimited's most successful and sought after swim lesson instructors for all age brackets while also coaching our highly popular masters swim program for adults 18 and over. Her enthusiasm for the sport of swimming is contagious and is routinely passed along to the children and adults she coaches. Her ability to get the most of each individual swimmer and her relationships with her swimmers set her apart and establish her as a top level coach.  With the help of her experience and well-qualified assistant coaches, Amethyst looks to build on the successes of past seasons and establish the Health Unlimited Hurricanes as recognized and respected program throughout the state.

Coach Diane  Coach Diane Paterline

Assistant swim coach, Diane Paterline, excels in teaching swimming with over 25 years experience teaching children and adults.  She is Water Safety Instructor and Instructor Trainer, Lifeguard, CPR and First Aid Instructor for the American Red Cross and is certified ASCA Level 3. Coach Diane was the Head Coach for the Merritt Marlins Swim Team for 3 years and Coordinator of Swim Lessons at the Merritt and previously Coordinator of Life Guards at the YMCA.

Last year Diane came on board to coach the Health Unlimited Hurricanes, teach swim lessons, stroke clinics, Masters swimming and Lifeguard Training Classes.  For the past 5 years, she has competed as a Master swimmer and this summer became a Senior Olympian.

Coach Monique Bender (Coach Moe)

Coach Monique Bender started competitive swimming at age 6 and continued through high school.  She reconnected with swimming when her children expressed an interest in the sport.  Coach Monique started her coaching career as a Pre-Team Coach for a summer swim team in Montgomery County.  She was very successful in developing this team of thirty-one 6 and under children into confident and competitive swimmers.

Over the next few years Coach Monique worked for a large winter swim club in Montgomery County instructing stroke clinic, swim lessons and competitive team.  She took this time to get her certifications to become a Swim America lesson instructor and then later, Site Supervisor.  During that time she became an American Swimming Coaches Assoc. Level II coach and is currently working on Level III certification.  Coach Monique has been the Head Coach for the Mount Airy Ridge Seals summer swim team for two seasons.  This will be her second season with the Hurricanes.

Coach Becca Scheffter:

Becca Scheffter is an assistant coach for the Teal group for the Hurricanes.  Coach Scheffter grew up in Mt. Airy and swam both on the Linganore High School Swim team and the Frederick Area Swim Team (FAST).  As a high school swimmer, she was the county champion in numerous events, including the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, and 100 backstroke, and still holds many records at Linganore.  With FAST, Coach Scheffter qualified for the highly competitive Sectional Meet two years in a row.  Coach Scheffter also went on to attend Bucknell University, a college in central Pennsylvania, and was a member of their Division I swim team for all four years of her college career.  Some of her notable achievements at Bucknell include:  Patriot League Champion in 100 freestyle and 50 freestyle, Most Valuable swimmer for 2005 and 2007, and Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the year for the year of 2005.

Also at Bucknell, she taught lessons and coached stroke clinics at the Bucknell Bison Swim School.  Coach Scheffter has been a lifeguard for the past six summers, and is now an English teacher at a Chapelgate Christian Academy.  She loves the sport of swimming and loves to work with kids, showing them how much fun swimming can be—with any team, at any pool, and at any level!
